Shared Stories - Our Mess is His Message

Welcome to the testimony collection of Detox with Jesus.

Here you will find real stories from people who have faced struggles like addiction, codependency, loss, shame, and brokenness — and who are learning to find hope and freedom in Jesus.

These stories are shared anonymously to protect confidentiality, but they are written with honesty and courage. Each testimony is tagged by topic, so you can find the voices that resonate with your own journey.

How to Use These Stories
• Read with respect. These are sacred journeys.
• Remember that no one’s story is perfect or finished — healing is a process.
• Let these words remind you that you are not alone, and that Jesus can meet you right where you are.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Here, our mess becomes His message — bringing light, freedom, and hope to others.

How It Works

  • Each participant may write their story as honestly as they are able.
  • Stories will be signed with a nickname, not real names, to protect confidentiality.
  • Each testimony will be tagged by topic (e.g., alcohol, gambling, divorce, anger, abuse, eating disorders, codependency, gender identity, etc.).
  • Newcomers and members can browse stories and find those that resonate with their own journey.

Why This Matters

  • For those struggling: reading another’s testimony can be the first spark of hope — “If God can help them, maybe He can help me too.”
  • For codependents and family: it gives a window into what addiction feels like from the inside, helping build empathy and understanding.
  • For the whole group: it reminds us that transformation is possible, not because we are strong, but because Jesus is strong in us.

Safety and Confidentiality

  • All submissions will be reviewed before posting.
  • Identifying details (names, places, employers, etc.) will be removed.
  • Testimonies will focus on the journey of struggle and hope, not on blaming or exposing others.

If a participant desires personal connection, they may choose to include a way to be contacted — but this is always optional.

Monthly Story Spotlight

Each month, selected stories may be shared in our newsletter, or can be shared in a group setting .

This structure shows that you are:

  • Encouraging honesty without shame.
  • Protecting confidentiality so people feel safe.
  • Creating connection by topic, not just age or family group.
  • Pointing every story to Jesus as the source of hope.

Detox with Jesus – Story Submission Policy

“Our Mess is His Message”

Sharing your story can bring hope to others walking a similar road. To protect confidentiality and keep this space safe, we ask that all testimonies follow these guidelines:

1. Keep It Honest and Personal
• Write in your own words about your struggles and how Jesus is meeting you in them.
• Share both the reality of your past/present and the hope of transformation.
• Focus on your journey, not on the failures of others.

2. Protect Confidentiality
• Do not use real names of family members, friends, churches, or workplaces.
• Use a nickname (of your choice) instead of your real name.
• Details that could identify people or places will be removed before posting.

3. Keep It Respectful
• Stories should not blame, shame, or attack others.
• Avoid graphic detail about abuse, violence, or sexual behavior — share honestly but without triggering language.
• If you mention addiction struggles (drugs, pornography, gambling, etc.), focus on the process of change and hope in Christ.

4. Keep It Christ-Centered
• Share how Jesus is helping you in your journey — whether it’s baby steps, breakthroughs, or ongoing struggles.
• It’s okay to write from a place of “still in process.” No story has to be perfect.
• Remember: Detox with Jesus is not about church rules, but about Jesus’ love, grace, and power to transform.

5. Length & Format
• Keep your story between 300–1,000 words (about 1–3 pages typed).
• Label your testimony with a topic tag (examples: alcohol, codependency, divorce, anger, eating disorder, abortion, pornography, gambling, grief, identity, etc.).
• You may choose more than one tag if your story touches on several struggles.

6. Review & Approval
• All stories will be reviewed before posting to protect anonymity and ensure safety.
• Approved stories may be posted on the Detox with Jesus website, highlighted during a newsletter, shared in groups, or read aloud at monthly meetings.
• If editing is needed for clarity or safety, you will be contacted before your story is published. For this reason we will need your real name and contact information, even though your story is posted with a “nickname” to maintain anonymity.

7. Optional Contact
• If you would like others to connect with you privately, you may include a safe method of contact (email created for this purpose, or through a leader).
• This is optional and not required.

Closing Word
Your story matters. By sharing honestly, you are helping someone else know they are not alone. Together, our mess becomes His message of love, healing, and freedom.
