Facing the Impossible Together with Hope

It is important to state the obvious: our communities are facing what feels like an impossible situation. Homeless camps grow on city streets because there is nowhere else to go. Political decisions, deportations, job losses, family breakdown, and addiction all contribute to the rising tide of displacement and despair.

Business owners feel trapped — not because they lack compassion, but because having people camped outside their storefronts affects their patrons and their livelihood. Families want to help their loved ones recover, but without practical supports like safe housing, financial help, and access to treatment, their best intentions often fail.

The systems we depend on — courts, hospitals, social services — are overwhelmed. Paperwork repeats, charges pile up, and hope gets lost in long wait times and bureaucratic delays. Even the most intelligent or resourceful person can feel stuck, and for those without education, money, or support, the obstacles feel insurmountable.

The result is an entitled population that lashes out in anger, exhausted professionals who don’t know how to keep up, landlords who walk away from renting to people who trash their premises, and communities who quietly give up, believing nothing will ever change.

But we must remember: the very impossibility we see is the exact place where God loves to work. When Jesus taught us to pray, He told us to say: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

For too long, this prayer has been absent — not only from our schools but often from our homes and communities. Yet this prayer is the doorway to breakthrough. It reminds us that when Jesus is at the center, heaven’s solutions touch earth’s impossibilities.

Yes, the needs are overwhelming. But prayer unlocks perspective, and perspective unlocks action. As Nehemiah’s wall was rebuilt not by one man but by many hands, so too can our broken systems, families, and communities be restored when each person takes up their part.

Or as the old gospel song – Jesus is the answer - declares with timeless truth:

“If you have some questions in the corners of your mind And traces of discouragement and peace you can not find …

I know you got mountains that you think you can not climb I know that your skies have been dark you think the sun won't shine …”

I'm here to tell you along with Andrae and Sandra Crouch that the World of God is true,

And “Jesus is the answer for the world today;

above Him there’s no other, Jesus is the way.”

The Biblical Model

Nehemiah 3 shows us the pattern:

“The work was organized and directed, with the spiritual leaders taking the lead (vs 1) and the people cooperating. God noted each worker and recorded his name in the book. Each person had a specific responsibility. Teamwork! No person can do everything, but every person can do something! There was a variety of workers -priests, rulers, women, craftsmen, Jews from other cities. Some were willing to do extra work. Some did their work at home. God will never ask us to do the impossible, He will always provide the necessary materials and grace and help.” — Dr. James Modlish This is God’s blueprint for rebuilding broken walls — and broken lives.

The Call of Jesus

In Matthew 25, Jesus says the final measure will not be church attendance or rituals, but love in action: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, welcoming the stranger, visiting the sick and imprisoned because “When you did it for the least of these, you did it for Me.”

Today, we need to declare a “state of emergency” - not one caused by floodwaters, but by a rising tide of homelessness, poverty, addiction, and despair. Despite tireless efforts by local agencies, professionals, and volunteers, the situation continues to worsen. Many are losing hope, believing there’s nothing we can do to stop the downward spiral. But I know there IS something we can do about it.

So, as we sit back and watch evil descending on the world, what do you think good men and women should do? The truth is, we don’t need to wait for someone else to fix what’s broken. Change begins when ordinary people decide to act with extraordinary love. Words alone can no longer hold back the flood of despair sweeping across our cities. It’s time for faith to take form — for compassion to roll up its sleeves.
