My Story
My struggle with alcohol began in my early 20s. At first, it was just social — a way to fit in, loosen up, and escape the stress of a hard job. But over time, it became more than that. Whenever life hurt, I reached for a bottle. When my marriage fell apart, drinking became my way of numbing the pain.

I didn’t realize how much it was affecting my kids until one of them asked, “Mom, why are you always tired?” That crushed me. I knew I was losing myself and the people I loved most.

I tried to stop on my own many times. I made promises, poured bottles down the drain, even attended a few meetings. But I always relapsed. The harder I tried, the more I failed. I felt ashamed and hopeless.

My Journey with Jesus:
One night, after another binge, I sat on the floor crying. I whispered, “God, if You’re real, I need You to help me. I can’t do this anymore.” That was the first honest prayer I had spoken in years.

Slowly, Jesus began showing up in small ways — through a friend who checked on me, through Scripture that reminded me I was loved, and through the inner strength to face each day.

I learned that my problem wasn’t just alcohol. It was an empty heart, trying to fill itself with something that never satisfied. Jesus began filling that emptiness with His love.

One Scripture that gave me hope was Romans 8:1 — “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” For so long, I thought I was too far gone. But He showed me I was still His child.

What I’ve Learned So Far:
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that freedom isn’t about trying harder — it’s about trusting more. I still have hard days, but now when the urge to drink comes, I go to Jesus first.

If I could encourage someone else, I would say: Don’t give up. Even if you’ve relapsed a hundred times, Jesus hasn’t let go of you. He can take your mess and turn it into a message of hope.

My Story
My struggle didn’t start with drinking or drugs. It started with trying to fix someone who did. My husband was an alcoholic, and I made it my mission to keep him from falling apart.

I covered for him when he missed work. I made excuses to family and friends. I hid empty bottles so the kids wouldn’t see them. I believed if I just loved him enough, if I just tried harder, he would change.

But the truth is, the more I tried to control him, the more I lost myself. I was exhausted, angry, and lonely. My children felt it too — they knew I was more focused on their dad’s problems than on their needs. I thought I was helping, but I was only feeding the cycle.

My Journey with Jesus
It wasn’t until I hit my own breaking point that I cried out to God. I remember saying, “Lord, I can’t carry him anymore. I can’t fix him. I don’t even know who I am without this fight.”

That was the moment I realized my codependency was an addiction of its own. My drug wasn’t alcohol — it was trying to fix the person using alcohol by manipulation and control.

Jesus began teaching me to let go. He showed me that my husband’s recovery was not in my hands, but in His. Slowly, I started setting boundaries — not out of anger, but out of love. I began caring for myself again: praying, journaling, even laughing with my kids.

The verse that gave me strength was Matthew 11:28 — “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” I had been carrying a burden Jesus never asked me to carry.

What I’ve Learned So Far
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that loving someone does not mean losing yourself. Jesus loves my husband more than I ever could, and He is the only one who can truly heal him.

Now, when I feel the urge to step back into control, I pause and pray: “Lord, help me love without fixing. Help me trust You more than I trust my own efforts.

” If I could encourage someone else, I would say: Your worth is not measured by how much you hold your family together. You are God’s child, and your needs and wants matter. He wants you to be “free” too.

Every Story Matters

Your story may be exactly what someone else needs to hear today.

You don't have to be a gifted writer, and you don't need to have all the answers. Simply share what Jesus has done - and is continuing to do - in your life. Honest stories of hope often become the encouragement someone else needs to take their first step toward healing.

This guide is here to help you tell your journey. You don't need to answer every question. Use the sections that best fit your experience and write from your heart.

To protect your privacy, you may wish to not include real names or identifying details. Choose a nickname and keep the people in your story anonymous. Your testimony can still bring hope while respecting the privacy of everyone involved.

Our Mess Becomes His Message when we allow God to use our journey to encourage someone else.

Tell us a little bit about the struggles you experienced before you encountered Jesus.
There may have been one moment - or a series of moments - when you began to recognize that Jesus was working in your life. Can you describe what you experienced? How did He begin to reveal Himself to you? What changed as you started trusting Him?
As your relationship with Jesus has grown, what has He been teaching you about your identity? To help you with wording, you might want to say something like: you've discovered that you are forgiven, deeply loved, accepted, a child of God, or no longer defined by your past. This is your opportunity to share what He has been showing you about how He sees you and this can bring hope and healing to others.
Has there been a Bible verse or passage that became especially meaningful during your journey? By sharing that Scripture, where it is found in the Bible, and explaining why it encouraged you or helped you keep moving forward, others will be encouraged to believe Jesus can speak to them through His Word as well.
Healing is often a journey rather than a single moment. What is the Holy Spirit teaching you today? Wording that might help you: helping you trust more deeply, forgive, set healthy boundaries, overcome fear, or walk in freedom. What you share can help another person find hope in your lived experience.
As you look back on your journey, what has God taught you that has made the greatest difference in your life? It may be a new understanding of His love, forgiveness, grace, faithfulness, or something entirely different. Sharing this lesson and how it continues to shape your walk with Him today, will strengthen and encourage others.
Imagine someone reading your story who feels hopeless, discouraged, or trapped in the very struggle you once faced. What would you want them to know? What words of hope, wisdom, or encouragement would you share from your own experience?

Thank You for Sharing Your Story

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on your journey and share what God has been doing in your life.

Writing your story is more than completing a form. It is an opportunity to look back and recognize the faithfulness of Jesus through every season - the victories, the struggles, the setbacks, and the hope that continues to grow.

One of the beautiful ways God strengthens us is by allowing our experiences to become a source of encouragement for others. As we share honestly, we remind one another that none of us walks this journey alone. Your willingness to tell your story may become the very encouragement someone else needs to take their first step toward healing.

If you have already written your testimony in your own words, you're welcome to upload it as a document instead of completing every section of this form. If you would rather share your story in your own voice, you may also upload an audio recording or a video. While many people choose to remain anonymous, others may feel comfortable sharing their identity. The choice is entirely yours.

Whether your story is shared through written words, your voice, or your face, our prayer is the same - that Jesus Christ will be glorified, lives will be encouraged, and hope will continue to grow through every testimony entrusted to us.

Thank you for becoming part of the Stories of Hope community. Your story matters, because what God is doing in your life matters.
